iPhone Recorder

SDK, apps, humor, news, ringtones April 5th, 2008

If you’ve ever wanted a good excuse to take your iPhone into class, how about using it to record your lectures? That’s what iPhone Recorder offers, together with the ability to directly record audio to ringtones without any computer necessary or any conversion processes in-between. Dynamic volume adjustment, channel and bitrate control, and a choice of mp3, mp4 and aac file formats round out a decent range of options; you can also directly attach them to an email from the app itself.

Now for the bad news: developer DreamCatcher is asking $29.95 for iPhone Recorder, which seems a bit steep for an audio recorder, even one as fully featured as this one is. It’ll be interesting to see what happens once the Apple App Store opens for business; right now iPhone Recorder requires a Jailbroken handset, but when people start finding their software the official way it’ll be far easier for developers to get freeware apps into the catalogue. Will there be a market for thirty-buck voice recorders by then?

TeenBuzz – high frequency ringtones for iPhone

ringtones April 1st, 2008

TeenBuzz, a website that offers ultrasonic high frequency ringtones, has added support for iPhone users.

The ringtones are of a particularly high frequency, which helps younger generations avoid detection of mobile phone usage. The theory here is that while younger people can hear the tones, older ones will not so, because of a naturally occurring hearing loss (presbycusis).

The new service works based on subscribing to a PodCast the website offers. Once this is accomplished a download to the ultrasonic ringtones will be given, and they will be automatically added to the ringtones directory.

You can also hear some samples on the website. Make sure your volume is not too high, though!

ToneShop: Free iPhone ringtones maker for Windows

Windows, apps, ringtones March 26th, 2008

Since Apple’s iTunes charge you 99 cents to create a ringtone for your iPhone, while many programs that do the same actually cost you money to download, some folks will be excited to find out about ToneShop, a free iPhone ringtones maker for Windows.

Actually to call it a ringtone maker just for the iPhone would be an understatement — ToneShop can create ringtones in MP3, AAC (M4A), WAV (uncompressed PCM and ADPCM), AMR-NB, AMR-WB (Nokia TrueTones), and MMF (Yamaha SMAF) formats, while the Apple iPhone M4R (AAC) format is just the latest addition to its lineup.

Audiko does free ringtones for the iPhone

apps, ringtones March 13th, 2008

Posted by Josh Lowensohn

I remember a time when making ringtones used to be a very cumbersome experience. My technique of choice was to use the open-sourced Audacity then do various conversions in iTunes or Quicktime Pro by tweaking some of the advanced settings. However, the Web has spawned newer, less tedious methods. On of them, Audiko, is a particularly well-done effort, letting you grab audio tracks from your hard drive or the Web and customize them for use on your mobile phone.

While I think ringtones of popular songs are largely annoying and superfluous, the tools to create them are actually quite fun. Audiko simply layers the entire track on one timeline, while giving you a magnified area for each minute of the song to manipulate up to a 40-second ringtone from the segment of your choice. The entire editor is overlaid on a waveform of the song, and you can toggle whether or not you want a fade on the in and out, which can be helpful if your phone doesn’t automatically do it for you.

When you’re all finished creating your pocket masterpiece you’ve got three simple download options. One will save it as a normal mp3 ringtone compatible on most major handsets, as well as an option to download the .m4r iPhone-compatible ringtone–something you normally need an application like iToner or GarageBand (both Mac-only apps) to create. There’s also a WAP-friendly URL to simply grab the audio file on your handset without having to sync to your desktop. Whatever you’ve created gets put into a pool of other songs, and you can even see and download other ringtones from the same artist that have been created by other users when you’re all done.

Edit MP3 tracks into ringtones for your phone without software or visual distractions using Audiko.
