Sonos Gives Away iPhone Remote Control, Adds Pandora and Last.FM

Sonos has added a few new features to its in-home streaming music players today. First is a software update for the actual Sonos gear, which gets bumped to version 2.7 and brings support for the Pandora and Last.FM music streaming services. More interesting, though is the new, free, Sonos Controller application for the iPhone.

In the video demonstration, it looks pretty great. Although the browsing might not be as pretty as that of the Apple made Remote, lacking album artwork, for instance, the core functions seem to work in a very intuitive manner.

We really like the way the volume control is handled for multiple Sonos units, for example — the master slider controls every room together, but the individual sliders are on the same screen for fine-tuning. The setup of new units and the routing of music to different rooms also looks easy. When it was released, Apple’s Remote was clearly a best of class example, and it looks like Sonos has taken a close look at that and re-rolled the essentials into its own app.

Best of all, it’s free. And just as well — At $350 for the cheapest Sonos box that can be hooked up to a stereo, compared to just $100 for an Airport Express, the Sonos gear looks very expensive, especially if you are hooking up multiple rooms.

But for people who are already networked with Sonos gear, and have been looking jealously at the excellent Remote App from Apple, this is a great free gift.

dTunes – like iTunes, but free!

Cydia, apps September 7th, 2008

dTunes, a new app by Richard Shearman, lets you grab all the free music you’d like, downloaded straight to your iPhone using some magic to combine SeeQPod’s streaming .mp3 service and Jonathan Misurda’s useful Safari Download Plugin.

Download dTunes (available via Cydia now on the MMi repo), and once installed, tap the magnifying glass or the Search Seeqpod button. dTunes will bring up a window with Seeqpod in it – simply search for the music you’d like, and when found, tap the song.

dTunes will bring up a download screen, and pull the .mp3 from Seeqpod’s source to your iPhone. Then head back to the main screen of dTunes, and simply tap the song you’d like to hear to play it! dTunes includes a media player directly in it, so you don’t have to switch applications, etc – its an all in one solution.

And yes, it even works via 3G and EDGE. Great for when you’re out and about, and hear a song you remember you want to grab at home (which I do all the time) – now you can just open dTunes and get it for free.

Please also check out the dev’s site, and send him a donation if ya like what he’s done.

Back to the 2006

humor April 21st, 2008

Hey, nowadays everyone has iPhone. We use it everyday and everywhere. We are discussing latest rumors about iPhone 2.0. Turn back to the year 2006.

iPhone 2006

Mythical hybrid from cell phone and mp3 player from Apple. The most awaiting device of the year of 2006 which release was postponed a lot of times. It had to roll over all electronic gadget world as iPod rolled over musical industry. Geeks were in expectation line. All internet had a lot of rumors about that gadget and full of unbelievable pix.

It’s sounds funny but i can’t imagine my life without iPhone now and I come up against a little bit difficulty when i try to use regular push-button cell phone :)

Apple trademarks App Store icon

news April 10th, 2008

per TGDaily

Cupertino (CA) – Apple is accelerating its patent efforts cover all legal bases to protect its iPhone assets, which also includes a potentially new cash cow – the App Store. It should not come as a surprise that the company has trademarked an App Store icon that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Applications folder in Mac OS X Leopard.

Last week, the US Patent and Trademark Office published a granted a trademark for the App Store icon, showing a visual representation for the upcoming digital download store for iPhone/iPod touch that will enable users to browse, preview, purchase, download and update iPhone applications.

The App Store icon reveals more than just a passing resemblance of the Applications folder in Mac OS X. Both icons use almost identical pictogram outlining the letter “A”, constructed from a pencil, a paintbrush and a ruler. Unlike Mac OS X Leopard icons for the Applications folder, the  App Store icon sports shiny dark and light blue shaded background that appears as if light streams originating from its center.

iPhone Users talk less, but Surf and Listen More, says iSuppli

news April 8th, 2008

by Jonathan Cassell – Editorial Director and Manager, Public Relations
via iSuppli

What do you call a mobile phone that owners employ for voice communications less than half the time they are using it?

Apple Inc. calls it the iPhone, and iSuppli Corp.’s latest consumer survey research indicates that U.S. owners of the popular product are spending their time enjoying all its capabilities, i.e. voice, data communications and multimedia entertainment, rather than exclusively using it for traditional voice calls.

Owners of all types of mobile handsets use their phones for voice communications 71.7 percent of the time, according to research from iSuppli’s ConsumerTrak survey of U.S. residents. In contrast, iPhone owners spend just 46.5 percent of their time with the product engaged in voice calls. So what are consumers doing with their iPhones instead of talking?

U.S. consumers said they spent 12.1 percent of their iPhone usage time accessing the Internet, a stark contrast with 2.4 percent for all mobile phones on average. Furthermore, iPhone owners spent 11.9 percent of their usage time listening to music or other audio, compared to just 2.5 percent for all mobile handset users.

“This usage pattern shows Apple has succeeded in producing a true convergence product that consumers like to use for multiple purposes,” said Greg Sheppard, chief development officer for iSuppli. “Apple has come as close as anyone to achieving a balanced convergence in mobile-handset features and usage.”

The attached figure presents the breakdown of average time usage for iPhone owners as well as for all mobile handsets.
