No U.K. iPhone price cut from O2

O2, news, ops April 7th, 2008

Editor’s Note: The following article is reprinted from Macworld UK.

Germany’s T-Mobile generated a wave of media attention with its decision to subsidize the purchase price of the iPhone in a new €99 (US$155) deal, announced last week, but Apple’s U.K. partner, O2, has no immediate plan to emulate the discount.

O2 logo

T-Mobile’s plan has been seen as predicated by one of two reasons: to stimulate flagging sales of the device in Germany, or to clear stock from the network’s channel, pending the coming release of a 3G-supporting model of the device.

Apple’s German iPhone network partner has been selling the 8GB model of iPhone for €399, but reduced the cost of that model to €99 late last week.

O2 has not chosen to emulate T-Mobile’s move, at least, not yet. An O2 spokesperson told Macworld UK:

“We regularly examine all of our offerings to ensure they remain competitive and meet customer demands. We currently have no updates regarding iPhone pricing.”

While this response leaves the door open to future price cuts on the part of Apple’s UK network partner, it does mean there’s no immediate price discount plan to be announced.

iPhone Users Surveyed: Young, Non-Mac Owners, Want Apps

news April 4th, 2008

Rubicon Consulting published data from an online survey of 460 “randomly” selected iPhone users. Full PDF of results is available from Rubicon. They claim there’s a 3.8% margin of error with a 90% confidence interval, but the validity of the data depends on how truly random their sampling was.

Summary of results:

- Email is the #1 function.
- iPhone increases mobile browsing with 75% of iPhone users saying it has led to more mobile browsing
- 50% of iPhone owners replaced conventional (non-smartphones) mobile phones.
- 1/3 of iPhone users carry a 2nd phone
- 1/4 of iPhone users say its displacing a notebook computer.
- 40% of iPhone users said “strongly” that they want to add new software apps.
- 40% if iPhone users said the browser has trouble with some web pages they want to visit

A few interesting graphs:

Pwnage Tool is out

Unlock, news April 3rd, 2008

Download Mac Version Now! Pwned Tool for Windows will be available later.

That’s right – you guys thought it was a prank, maybe an April fools joke. It’s not. I met today with Nilay over at Engadget and surely he was surprised. We let him take a swing at it and he did it all by himself – oh and then there were a few smart remarks involving us laughing at him. What a joker.

The tool’s name is Pwnage Tool. The main goal is for you to “PWN” your phone, and then be able to restore it straight to an unlocked/jailbroken state (hence the “PWN”) from right within iTunes.

pwnage

The iPhone Devs have been working around the clock to bring you this tool – and by golly they’ve done it. Oh, and everything legal, Pwnage is 100% within the law. We at The iPhone Project are proud to present on behalf of the Dev Team: Pwnage Tool.

iLibertyX, iLiberty+ iPhone unlock hacks

Mac, Unlock, Windows, apps March 30th, 2008

Another neat new program (actually, two of them) popped up online for complete GUI iPhone and jailbreaking. Both of the programs (one is for Mac, the other is for Windows machines), just like ZiPhone, can unlock any existing and currently available iPhone firmware version (from v1.0.0 to v1.1.4 — it can also jailbreak the iPod Touch).

The programs provide a nice clean, user-friendly interface, and can also fix the no EDGE/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth problem some may have run into. It even automatically shuts down iTunes and detects which type of device is connected (iPhone or iPod Touch), and then changes the settings accordingly.

iPhone. Your Lifestyle Companion

accessories March 30th, 2008

via UnWiredView.com

Now that iPhone has almost become an open platform for third party software development, we can expect tons of new exciting applications that will make it into a much more useful thing, then a fancy phone and media player.

But that does not mean that developers inside Apple are leaving all this to the third parties. They are also busy, thinking up a whole lot of new things that an iPhone could do.

And recent patent applications provide us with a glimpse of the things to come.

When I started browsing through these patents , I first thought that it was just a new fitness application for iPhone:

iPhone SDK: now with 100% more Interface Builder

SDK, programming March 28th, 2008

At the special event earlier this month where Apple laid out the future of developing software for the iPhone, the company said that it would be providing the full suite of its existing development tools, such as Xcode, for creating iPhone applications. However, in the first version of the SDK that was rolled out, there was one notable omission from that lineup: Interface Builder, the application that lets developers easily design the UI of their program.

Given the importance of UI on the Mac, Interface Builder is a pretty critical tool in the development process, and some developers had chosen to hold off on their efforts until the SDK was revised. Which, as you might have guessed, was today. A new version of the SDK—build 9A2151 for the alphanumerically curious among you—has been posted, including the anticipated Interface Builder.

iPhone SDK

That seems to be the only major change in the latest build, according to the SDK’s read me, which continues to list some known issues for what Apple calls the “Beta 2” release; Apple says “this second beta is known to be incompatible with installation folders
other than the default /Developer.” So be a good little feller and install it where it wants to go.
