How to setup Ubuntu to works with AirPort Express

accessories, news, tricks October 16th, 2009

Hi, guys. I’ve found the great solution to stream all your local sounds to AirPort Express, which connected to your multimedia sound system. Frankly speaking it was almost in the default installation of Ubuntu Linux. All you need is to install the latest Pulse Audio and Pulse Audio Volume Control

sudo apt-get install pulseaudio pavucontrol paprefs padevchooser pulseaudio-module-raop

Go to the top menu System -> Preferences -> PulseAudio Preferences

Choose in the top menu

Applications -> Sound & Video -> PulseAudio Volume Control

In the Playback tab choose an application you want to stream and select Stream on dropdown menu your AirPort Express

This is the one way you can do it. But i prefer the following solution. Click with right mouse button on the Sound Volume icon in the application tab and select Sound Properties

In the Output tab select your AirPort Express device and that it. Everything should play well and you can manage volume right from Ubuntu Volume Control or using your hard keyboard button. That works very nice for me even better than in Windows or Mac OS X cause you can stream every application you want and control volume control using your system settings. One more thing i would like to mention is that there is no way to use your iPhone with Remote application

Have a fun

p.s. feel free to share solutions for another versions of Linux OS, like Debian etc.

Great trick to convert video from YouTube to .mp4 without any software

tricks November 12th, 2008

For example you wanna save following video from youtube.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXRH50fvHWA as mp4 file on your computer. Just add mp4 after http://www.youtube and before .com in the address bar, e.g. http://www.youtubemp4.com/watch?v=YXRH50fvHWA and click on it. On the opened page you will get the link to download mp4 file. Save Link As from context menu of your browser (click right mouse button on the link to display context menu). Now you can add that file to your iTunes library and synchronize with your iPhone/iPod.

Feel free to ask if something is not quite clear.

Sonos Gives Away iPhone Remote Control, Adds Pandora and Last.FM

Sonos has added a few new features to its in-home streaming music players today. First is a software update for the actual Sonos gear, which gets bumped to version 2.7 and brings support for the Pandora and Last.FM music streaming services. More interesting, though is the new, free, Sonos Controller application for the iPhone.

In the video demonstration, it looks pretty great. Although the browsing might not be as pretty as that of the Apple made Remote, lacking album artwork, for instance, the core functions seem to work in a very intuitive manner.

We really like the way the volume control is handled for multiple Sonos units, for example — the master slider controls every room together, but the individual sliders are on the same screen for fine-tuning. The setup of new units and the routing of music to different rooms also looks easy. When it was released, Apple’s Remote was clearly a best of class example, and it looks like Sonos has taken a close look at that and re-rolled the essentials into its own app.

Best of all, it’s free. And just as well — At $350 for the cheapest Sonos box that can be hooked up to a stereo, compared to just $100 for an Airport Express, the Sonos gear looks very expensive, especially if you are hooking up multiple rooms.

But for people who are already networked with Sonos gear, and have been looking jealously at the excellent Remote App from Apple, this is a great free gift.

dTunes – like iTunes, but free!

apps, Cydia September 7th, 2008

dTunes, a new app by Richard Shearman, lets you grab all the free music you’d like, downloaded straight to your iPhone using some magic to combine SeeQPod’s streaming .mp3 service and Jonathan Misurda’s useful Safari Download Plugin.

Download dTunes (available via Cydia now on the MMi repo), and once installed, tap the magnifying glass or the Search Seeqpod button. dTunes will bring up a window with Seeqpod in it – simply search for the music you’d like, and when found, tap the song.

dTunes will bring up a download screen, and pull the .mp3 from Seeqpod’s source to your iPhone. Then head back to the main screen of dTunes, and simply tap the song you’d like to hear to play it! dTunes includes a media player directly in it, so you don’t have to switch applications, etc – its an all in one solution.

And yes, it even works via 3G and EDGE. Great for when you’re out and about, and hear a song you remember you want to grab at home (which I do all the time) – now you can just open dTunes and get it for free.

Please also check out the dev’s site, and send him a donation if ya like what he’s done.

iPhone 3G: AT&T

news June 11th, 2008

This is great interview with Brad Mays, AT&T PR made by editor of iphonebuzz.com Chase Higgins

Will you allow the iPhone 3G to be used on your pre paid service? No, each new iPhone requires a new, two-year contract. There will be no pre-paid or month-to-moth options.

Basically now there is no doubt, that the iPhone will not be able to be used on pre paid plans. This is unfortunate, as all the pre pay plans can do is give Apple more sales. It does not fit with Apple
