Bloomberg’s iPhone app a window onto Wall Street

AppStore, apps July 15th, 2008

The world of finance is sober, serious business, ever more so in a struggling through economy. Bloomberg’s freeware application for the iPhone and iPod Touch gives information-seekers a clear view of the moment with financial headlines, a ticker finder, and a fleshed-out index of world markets.

Bloomberg stocks on the iPhone

An appealing dark-themed app, Bloomberg contains a read-only newsfeed and statistics on various exchanges in global markets. Highs, lows, and a graph of yearlong performance are displayed for each exchange–further charts and tables are available for industry and stock movers.

To discover individual stock performance, users simply enter the company name into the stock finder, which also keeps a short-term history of your past queries. Even better, entering stocks and your share holdings into the My Stocks folder creates a personalized portfolio you can watch for daily fluctuation.

LiveJournal.app v.0.3.1

LiveJournal.app has been upgraded to version 0.3.1. This upgrade is mostly about fixing previous version’s bugs rather than installing new features, but there are some of those as well.

What’s new:

  • you can choose a userpic for each entry and choose your default userpic;
  • now you can add new tags in the “edit entry” menu;
  • the program now remembers your Location(s), so you’ll be able to choose one of the earlier specified locations when editing your entry (this locations menu will become available as soon as your save at least one location);
  • progress bar for image upload now reflects the real upload progress;
  • the option of choosing images is now available for versions below 1.1.3 (this hasn’t been tested);
  • a menu with options to open the journal or the published entry opens up after successful publication.

What’s old:

  • bug fix for ScrapBook authentication, which did not recognize usernames with _ (underscore);
  • bug fix for application’s shutdown during posting with no internet connection;
  • within the limits of one session the application does not upload the same pictures once more if they were specified for upload twice or if the connection was broken in the process of the posting;
  • bug fix for mistakes found in the process of working with the tag selection table;
  • bug fix for sometimes incorrect behavior of the Post button;
  • several other insignificant bugs were fixed.

Special thanks go out to [info]dorofej, [info]qik, [info]diesel_ks, [info]ruben и [info]padla_cableguy for their help in testing this application. It became much more stable with their help.
Also thanks to [info]q_marik for her help in translating all of this into English.

Apple Introduces MobileMe Internet Service

news June 10th, 2008

One of the big announcements to come out of WWDC 08′ was the introduction of Apple’s new MobileMe Internet service. MobileMe features push email, push contacts and push calendars from your “cloud” to native apps on your iPhone, iPod touch, Mac or PC. MobileMe will be available shortly and will replace Apple’s .mac service.

The MobileMe service will deliver a desktop-like experience on the web. Changes made on your MobileMe cloud will automatically update native applications on all of computers and or devices. “Think of MobileMe as ‘Exchange for the rest of us,’” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Now users who are not part of an enterprise that runs Exchange can get the same push email, push calendars and push contacts that the big guys get.”

The MobileMe web applications are 100% ad free and includes 20GB of online storage. The service will be available on July 11th priced at $99 for individuals and $149 for a family pack (includes one master account with 20GB of storage and four 5GB family member accounts.

Apple has posted a video tour describing the new features of MobileMe.

iPhone 2.0 software update. Coming soon.

apps, firmware, news, programming June 10th, 2008

With the iPhone 2.0 Software Update, your iPhone will do even more. Extend its capabilities with innovative applications you download directly from the new App Store. Get push email, calendar, and contacts from your Microsoft Exchange server at work. And use great new features in Mail, Contacts, and other applications. Free in the next update.

iPhone firmware 2.0 was detailed in WWDC with some rumored features finally seeing the day of light. Features include:

  • iWork and Office document viewing
  • Save images from E-Mail directly to photo library
  • Contact Search
  • E-Mail/SMS Bulk Delete & Move
  • Scientific Calculator when switched to Landscape Mode in Calculator
  • Support for a TON of languages including Chinese, Japanese

On top of those features, Jobs detailed enterprise support for mass distribution of apps (up to 100 authorized iPhones) and also unveiled a new push notification system for apps that would use it (such as IM clients).

Firmware 2.0 will be available for iPhone users come ‘Early July’ for free and for iPod Touch users at a reduced fee (compared to the last update) of $9.95.

Rails Plug-In for building iPhone applications from iPhone World by David

programming June 10th, 2008

Pathfinder, a software development and user experience design firm, announced the initial release of rails_iui, an open source Rails Plug-In for the iPhone.

The plug-in makes it easier to build iPhone enabled web applications. Rail plugin adds the ability to iUI framework which contains a number of CSS styles and JavaScript event handlers, to make iPhone Web apps look and feel somewhat like native iPhone applications.

“While developing my latest mobile web application with iUI, I realized I was building up a library, so I converted everything to a Rails plug-in,” stated Rappin, creator of the plugin. “Open source is all about sharing what you have learned and making contributions to support the community.””

Currently the plug-in focuses on automating common tasks and streamlining development. Future enhancements include improvements in documentation, testing and leveraging the Rails framework to enhance interactions, especially related to history and back behavior.

Google launches gNews for iPhone, adds international flavors

apps, news May 13th, 2008

As the iPhone continues to march across the globe, Google’s special (and slick) interface that was introduced in mid-December has been limited to English speakers. However, yesterday the company rolled it out to 33 countries in 16 languages, including Chinese–despite the fact the handset is not available through any Chinese carriers.

More importantly, Google continues to create special mobile variations of its other pages, which now includes Google News and support for users of Google Apps. Google Apps users can now check their mail using the same interface regular Gmail users have been enjoying, with the added benefit of being signed in to use the other mobile Google services.

The updated news viewer allows users to browse by the front page or by section, and features a built-in search tool. It’s still essentially a link repository to other third-party sites, but it’s now far easier to parse through on smaller screens than its original format.

What really makes the updated News page shine is that it integrates YouTube videos in the related stories. If there are videos for a selected subject, you can view them as thumbnails, which when clicked will jump you to the handset’s built-in YouTube viewer. Short of actually having Flash, this is the closest you’ll get to being able to casually watch Web videos while browsing other news networks. You could also use a conversion tool like vTap or Avot mV, but this new system requires one less step.

I still think most iPhone users will be inclined to use Safari’s built in-search tool, which can be set to use either Google or Yahoo without having to venture to a search page first. With the speed of EDGE, I often find myself skipping any unnecessary page load when it comes time to search on the go, something that won’t be fixed until the purported 3G version of the handset comes out later this year.

  • Follow and Stop Following buttons added – another big wish list item checked off
  • Embedded image URLs for non-Twinkle user – and another one
