iPhone 3G Availability Tracking Just Got Easier

news July 28th, 2008

If you are in the market for the iPhone 3G, you’ve probably encountered your local Apple Store being out of stock. Apple continues to replenish stock and even has their own availability application on their site. The site requires you to drill down in order to check your local availability. Utilizing Apple’s JSON file, Chris Barnes has created a “mashup” providing quick access to iPhone 3G availability across the country. Apple Retail Stores are now opening at 8 a.m every day, but Sunday to accomodate the demand.

iPhone 3G availability

At last check, only 1% of stores throughout the US had no 3G iPhones in stock. 87% have the 8GB in stock, 98% have the 16GB white in stock and only 92% have the 16GB black iPhone 3G in stock.

O2 UK discount iPhone 3G to free

O2, ops June 25th, 2008

Back when the iPhone first launched in the UK, many users were disappointed by the comparatively high price Apple and carrier O2 were charging.  One of the key messages from the iPhone 3G announcement, then, was the confirmation that the same $199 (or equivalent) entry point would be matched in all markets.  O2 have just unveiled their monthly contract details, including confirmation that the carrier will be subsidising the 8GB iPhone 3G to free on certain contracts, as well as revealed that for the first time the handset will be available on pay-&-go prepay.

O2 logo

O2 are yet to release details of pay-&-go iPhones, but we do know the pricing for the contract version.  A new £30 plan has been introduced, which means there are now four contract choices (£30, £35, £45, £75); on the two cheaper plans the iPhone 3G will cost £99, whereas on the two higher-priced plans it will be free.  That assumes a new eighteen month contract.

O2 iPhone 3G contracts

All tariffs include unlimited browsing, unlimited Wi-Fi access, visual voicemail and reduced roaming rates with O2’s International Traveller Service.  Existing iPhone owners will be able to upgrade to the new 3G model without penalty, as long as they sign up to a new 18-month contract; they’ll pay the normal price for whatever tariff they choose.

iPhone 3G may actually cost $173 to produce

news June 25th, 2008

It’s always interesting to see how different analysts come up with numbers. Take for instance the raw cost of materials for the new iPhone 3G. Portelligent released their estimates not long ago which suggested that Apple’s cost was only roughly $100. Well iSuppli has taken a look and come up with a drastically different figure.

iPhone 3G

According to the recent findings from iSuppli, they believe Apple will be paying roughly $173 for materials and manufacturing of the 8GB iPhone 3G. While they are estimating $73 higher than Portelligent, that’s still considerably less than the original iPhone, which was around $226.

You can bet that Apple is hoping you spring for the 16GB model (I know I am) as it is estimated that the additional memory will only cost them $23 more than the 8GB model. Of course, we’ll be paying an extra $100, so that’s a nice $77 in Apple’s pocket.

Flash support for iPhone revealed in iPhone 3G screen shot?

apps, news June 24th, 2008

There are a number of things that could negate this story, but it is still one of those rumors that you just really hope is true. A screen shot of the iPhone loading the site lonelyplanet.com, shows the device rendering out Flash content on the site. The site has a mini map on the side, that looks a certain way when loaded up in Flash, and also a certain way when loaded up without it.

That is what the site looks like under iPhone firmware 1.1.4, a flat map with no Flash, and no variations. It is clearly very different from the screen shot of a normal desktop web browser, loading the site up, with full Flash support.

As you can see in this screen shot from a desktop, the map is a little fancier. It has color variations, and also hover effects and mouse over actions.

Lastly, this is how it looks on the iPhone 3G. Well, this is how it might look. Clearly the device shows a full version of the page in the browser, but this is almost certainly marketing material. Meaning screen rendering, and this could be an oversight by Apple. On the more exciting side, Apple could have thrown in Flash support and waited for someone to catch on to this little detail, you decide.
