Apple files face and presence detection patent app

Apple, news December 30th, 2011

In the future, there may be a new way of logging into your Apple gear like the iPhone or iPad. Apple has filed a patent app that outlines a way that the gadgets could log different users in using presence detection and face detection reports PatentlyApple . The cool part is that you could have multiple accounts on the devices and would need to do nothing to log into your account. The patent has some snazzy line art with a stick figure walking up to the gadget. It outlines that the detection would look at skin tone, location of eyes and mouth compared to a reference image, and match the face with one in an image. The presence detection could turn the device on as soon as you walk up. Together the device would turn itself off and on and log you into your user account just by you walking up to it. That sounds really cool. [ via SlashGear]

App Store served 5.65 million free downloads daily in November

App Store, apps, news December 29th, 2011

We all know that most of the apps that the App Store moves are free downloads. Some developers make money off the in-app sales and DLC for these free games. During the month of November, there were a huge number of free apps downloaded. According to metrics firm Fiksu, there were 5.65 million free apps downloaded during November alone. That is up from 4.91 million free apps in October. I can only imagine how much the bandwidth that all those downloads consumed cost Apple. Comparing November 2010 to November 2011, the uploads were up 83%. Before October the number of free downloads was declining. That decline is blamed in part on the wait for the iPhone 4S by consumers. [ via SlashGear]

iMAME App on App Store for now

app, gaming, iPhone, news December 22nd, 2011

We have all seen Apple approve some very strange apps, then turn around, and remove them from the app store citing violations of one form or another. Things like that shake the baby app for instance. Apple has a history of not allowing unofficial arcade game emulators on the App Store. One such unofficial emulator is on the App Store right now. It is called iMAME and it has a virtual arcade cabinet with controls surrounding the game on your screen. We suspect the app might not stay on the App Store very long. The app has games called Circus, Side Track, and Hard Hat by default. The thing that is likely to get the app pulled is that you can add your own ROMs, thus allowing you to toss other games on and those games could be Atari classics for instance. Grab the app while you can if you are a fan. The app is compatible with the iCade as well. [ via SlashGear]

Twenty or so years ago, my best friend and I were probably sat in front of a 21″ CRT TV and a Commodore Amiga, ready to play Battle Squadron.  The only way to play back then was with your joystick-of choice, and if I remember correctly, mine was the QuickShot Maverick joypad, and my mate

Bluetooth, iPhone, news December 19th, 2011

A cool new product for those prone to forgetting where they parked is on Kickstarter . The device uses Bluetooth 4.0, an app, and a USB dongle in the car to help you find where you park. Facebook app use on the iPhone is trailing the use of the Android app in daily active users. The iPhone is still tops in monthly active users though. Holiday sales for the iPhone are booming as other smartphone makers struggle. Five of the top fifteen devices sold of late are different versions of the iPhone.

Elevation iPhone dock, Apple patent decision delayed, E4200 router controlled by iPhone

iPhone, news December 14th, 2011

A new and awesome new iPhone dock has shown up on Kickstarter and just blown up. The dock is called the Elevation Dock and it scored its $75,000 in funding in the first 8 hours and continues to get money. The dock is made to stay in place and be east to put your iPhone in and out of. The ITC ruling in the patent infringement case Apple brought against HTC for allegedly using its patents has been delayed again. There is no indication from the ITC why the ruling has been delayed for a second time. Linksys has a new router called the E4200 v2 that has launched that has a cool new feature. That new feature allows the router to be set up and managed form an iPhone or other devices using a Linksys app.
