Walt Mossberg: Despite The Exposed Antenna, The iPhone 4 Does Better Than The 3Gs [video] Post from: FSMdotCOM Walt Mossberg, personal technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal, tested the iPhone 4 for six weeks and came to the conclusion that although i4′s voice call capabilities could’ve been better handled, the devices still does better than its predecessor, the iPhone 3Gs. He also said that the ‘death grip’ is not such a serious issue. It does make the i4 drop bars yes, but it’s not dropping calls. Despite the hot-spot issue and the exposed antenna, the iPhone 4 does better than the 3GS for me in decent coverage. But I still wouldn’t advise adopting it as your primary phone if you live, work or travel in areas with poor AT&T reception, or if you prefer a network under less stress. iPhone 4 jailbreak not released, AT&T iPhone exclusive end a positive, WiFi enabled iPhone closer to Chinese launch

In the world of jailbreaking Apple products Geohot is the man. Geohot has a jailbreak ready to go for the iPhone 4, but apparently won’t release the software because the release would just lead to users demanding the next step in the unlock cycle. Reuters reports that if AT&T loses iPhone exclusivity early next year it won’t necessarily spell doom for the carrier. Reuters figures most people would not switch and the resulting decline in new users changing from carriers could be offset by less need for new infrastructure to support data demand. The demand for the official iPhone in China and not been that great, mostly because the official handset lacks WiFi and is more expensive than gray market alternatives. The official iPhone with WiFi has reportedly cleared a hurdle to be offered in China with the device reportedly being granted a network access license in China last week.

The lack of support for Flash on Apple devices is infamous. YouTube has now launched a new mobile site for the iPhone and iPad that is made with HTML5. Some iPhone 4 users have been reporting significantly decreased upload speed sin some areas. AT&T has announced that a defect in its network is causing the issue and not a change in how it throttles the iPhone. We had heard that a new firmware was coming that would address the poor signal that some users of the iPhone 4 complain of. Apple has now stated that the reception issues with the iPhone 4 are a hardware problem and won’t be fixed with software . The software will only fix the bar display to show accurately.

Post from: FSMdotCOM So you made the mistake of thinking you’d save some money by lowering your iPhone data plan down to the 2 gig deal when you bought your new iPhone 4 . Or maybe you’re a new AT&T subscriber, and you want that unlimited plan that old AT&T customers were grandfathered into. Well I got an answer…this may or may not work for long, so don’t dilly dally around. Give it a try. Its a pretty simple deal really, just a little loop hole that hasn’t been shut yet..and yet is the important word. You’ll need to borrow an iPhone 2g, and make a Sim adapter to swap your micro-sim into a full sized iPhone Sim tray. I just cut an old Sim with an exact-o knife and a little piece of scotch tape to hold it in place. How you decide to do this is up to you. Place the SIM tray into the iPhone 2g. Activate it, as it will ask you to do. When activating select the Unlimited option (for $20). When activated, take the sim card out of the iPhone 2g and place it back into the iPhone. Done. You will get a Text after a little while informing you that your plan is now $30 for the 3G service…but you will still have the unlimited plan. Hurry before its to late, and they close this loop hole up. Remember, your milage may vary on this.

iPhone 4 Costs $187.51 To Make. More Than iPhone 3G or 3Gs Post from: FSMdotCOM Electronista reports that, the iPhone 4 is Apple’s most expensive ever phone to make short of the original phone itself, a price breakdown by iSuppli has found. A 16GB example costs about $187.51 in raw parts; the bill is less than the $223 of the 2007 original but more than the $173 iPhone 3G and the $178.96 iPhone 3GS. Most of that cost increase is attributed to the LG Display-built 960×640 IPS screen, which is estimated to cost $28.50 all by itself. The next most expensive part is thought to be Apple’s custom-designed, but Samsung manufactured, A4 processor, which could cost about $10.75. Adding a gyroscope from STMicro may have also hiked the price by $2.60 on top of the accelerometer. A front camera also influences the price, but its cost isn’t yet known.

Foxconn rumor points to factory closing, AT&T talks iPhone upgrade, Apple considers two WWDC shows a year

A big rumor is floating around that Foxconn might be closing down its Chinese manufacturing plants for the iPhone. The rumor claims the operations would be moved to India and Vietnam. AT&T is offering some information for folks who just purchased the iPhone 3GS before the iPhone 4 was announced. IPhone 3GS buyers that purchased between May 7 and June 7 will get a credit of $50 for the 16GB version or $100 for the 32GB version, but you have to go into the store and ask. Apple is reportedly considering hosting two WWDC conferences per year. One of them would be for iOS and the other for OS X.
