NTSB adopt iPhone 5, ATT rolling out more FaceTime over cellular support, Apple spaceship campus delayed

AT&T, facetime, iPhone 5, news November 21st, 2012

Another government agency has left the BlackBerry smartphone behind and is adopting the iPhone. The NTSB has confirmed that it is leaving BlackBerry smartphones behind in favor of the iPhone 5 after existing BlackBerry devices begin to fail “at an unacceptable rate.” Reports are coming in that AT&T is rolling out broader support for FaceTime over cellular networks to more customers. Specifically customers using non-LTE devices on grandfathered unlimited data plans are reporting FaceTime over cellular support. It looks like Apple’s fancy spaceship campus is going to be delayed . Apple has made some minor changes to its plans, which will result in delays in other aspects of construction and the required approvals that could push construction back to 2014.

The FCC has noted that it would review objections made against AT&T and proposed extra fees for using FaceTime over the carrier’s wireless network. Consumer advocacy groups are up in arms because they believe AT&T is violating the FCC’s open Internet rules. Instagram has updated its iPhone app to support iPhone 5 and iOS 6. Interestingly, it appears that live filter options are missing from the updated version for the iPhone 5. Google has updated its Google Voice app for iOS 6. The update brings the ability to text directly from the inbox and designate a fallback number in the event of Google Voice failure.

AT&T offers settlement to plaintiff in data throttling suit

AT&T, iPhone, news March 14th, 2012

A man filed a lawsuit against AT&T in small claims court recently. The man’s name is Matthew Spaccarelli. Apparently the man won in small claims court to the tune of $850 when the judge ruled against AT&T after deciding that AT&T had in fact broken its promise to provide unlimited data service. The man then began encouraging other AT&T customers to sue and even went so far as to post the documents he used to win his case online. AT&T was having none of that and tries to silence the man with the threat of canceling his service. AT&T apparently wanted him to remove the documents from the Internet and sign an agreement that he wouldn’t talk about case. Spaccarelli decided he would prefer to shame AT&T as much as humanly possible rather than sign a nondisclosure. Apparently, the guy admitted to tethering is iPhone, which is against AT&T’s policy of allowing users to do anything useful with their service. That is what AT&T was using to threaten termination of service. [ via SlashGear]

ATT increases that throttling threshold and Square to allow taxi payments

AT&T, news March 2nd, 2012

AT&T has been catching a lot of heat recently over the throttling of data speeds for consumers that go over a certain bandwidth allowance each month. This is despite the fact that some studies have shown throttling does nothing to alleviate congestion on networks. AT&T has now announced that it will make adjustments to the data throttling policy for customers that have legacy unlimited plans. Under the new plan consumers now have higher data caps before their speed is throttled. HSPA+ plans now have a 3 GB per month cap with LTE plans getting 5 GB. Some customers on unlimited data plans have claimed previously that they were throttled after 2 GB of data was used. Square has offered an accessory for accepting mobile payments for the iPhone and iPad for a while now. Square has now announced that you’ll soon be able to pay for taxi rides using an iPad running the Square app inside the cab. Presumably, taxies could use an iPhone and the accessory as well. Passengers will even be able to use the iPad to surf the web during the ride.
