iOS 4.3 Beta 1 Suggests New iPhone And iPad Models. Apple Might Remove The Home Button On Gen Devices Post from: FSMdotCOM Apple pushed iOS 4.3 beta 1 yesterday, and today Engadget reports that if you dig far enough into iOS’s code, you’ll eventually come across iPhone3,1, which is the AT&T iPhone 4, and the analogous iPhone3,2 (i.e. Verizon iPhone ). It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but then along comes iOS 4.3 with a handful of new mystery identifiers to spurn speculation — namely, two new-generation iPhones (4,1 and 4,2) and three iPads (2,1; 2,2; and 2,3). Speculate all you want, but there isn’t much else at all we can say definitively here, but if we had to take a guess, it’s the GSM and CDMA variants of the next-gen models (plus a WiFi-only iPad). In other news, BGR reports that Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Yes, we are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher. That’s not all, however. In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Additionally, Apple’s popular photo-taking application, Photo Booth, will be appearing on the next iPad. It’s also very possible that we’ll see iLife apps for iOS unveiled around the iPad 2 release as well.

New iPhones surface in firmware, iPhone not as cool as Aston Martin, Google Voice app may be coming soon

Two new iPhones have surfaced in the firmware for the AppleTV device. The current iPhone 4 is 3,1 according to Apple and the new devices in the firmware are listed as 3,2 and 3,3. Research has surfaced that was conducted by CoolBrands Council and it has found that the iPhone had been knocked out of the coolest brands mark by Aston Martin. Even James Bond likes Aston Martin; it’s a hard brand to beat. Rumors floating around are suggesting that the official Google Voice app for the iPhone may be imminent. The app was submitted after Apple relaxed app guidelines for the App Store.

3G iPhone: What we know and what we don’t

In the last several weeks, rumors and speculation about the upcoming 3G version of the iPhone have greatly multiplied. The reasons for this sudden increase in noise could could be any number of things, but seasoned Apple-rumor-followers know from experience that an increase in chatter almost always indicates that something is about to hit, regardless of whether any one chatterer was entirely accurate.

So, we know it’s coming, but what else? Here, we try to differentiate between what we know, what we don’t, and everything in between.

What we know

Apple has made no secret of the reasoning behind not going with a 3G chip in the original iPhone. On the day of the iPhone’s launch last June, Steve Jobs cited both the physical size of the chip and power consumption as the main reasons Apple favored EDGE upon launch. The company made it clear, however, that it would launch a 3G version once these issues had been worked out to Apple’s liking.

Since then, information on the 3G iPhone began rolling in. In September, Apple inked a deal with InterDigital, a relatively big name when it comes to licensing 3G technologies. In November 2007, a contact at O2 (the exclusive iPhone carrier in the UK) told Ars that Apple had told the company to expect a 3G iPhone “very late next year.” Later that same month, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson reinforced that anonymous comment with a more official one, saying that the 3G iPhone would come “next year.”

And that’s almost all that we know for sure. But before we get into the list of rumors and speculation, one more mention of 3G popped up this week when Apple released beta 3 of its iPhone SDK. Hackers found that the new firmware contains references to an updated chipset

Apple already ordered 10,000,000 3G iPhones?

According to Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney, Apple has ordered 10 million iPhones made to operate on 3G networks, based on the rumours he has heard in Asia. This is an additional 10 million, to current gen phones which Apple hopes to sell by the end of 2008.

Dulaney also said that 3G iPhone uses an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display which would lead to a thinner phone and longer battery life
