Wooden iPhone kits, Apple china launch poorly planned, Apple Q1 sales boom

iPhone, news January 25th, 2012

If you have dropped your iPhone, cracked the back glass, and want to fix it with something that might last longer, one of these wooden back kits might be just what you need. The kit will fit the iPhone 4 and 4S and you can see how to install here . Apple’s CEO has admitted that it planned poorly for the iPhone 4S launch in China. The demand and short supply is said to be what sparked near riots in China. There have been shortages in other countries that haven’t led to egg throwing and abused Apple workers so I hardly think this is at Apple’s feet alone. Apple offered up its Q1 2012 financial figures yesterday and sales for the company were gigantic. The company posted $24 billion in revenue for the iPhone and related products and services.

iOS Epson projection app, 64GB iPhone 4 doing well, 500k iPhone 4S users jailbreak

Apple, iPhone, jailbreak, news, Sales January 24th, 2012

Epson has launched a new iProjection iOS app that allows the iPhone and other devices to wirelessly project to Epson projectors. That means you can give a presentation with nothing but your iPhone and the projector. A new survey of recent iPhone 4S buyers has found that 21% are opting for the 64GB version. The survey also found a significant percentage of them are coming from other operating systems. So far, a half million iPhone 4S users have taken advantage of the new 4S jailbreak . The jailbreak was a long time coming since the A5 processor was so hard to crack.

iPhone 4S gets untethered jailbreak!

iphone 4s, jailbreak, news January 23rd, 2012

I bet that there are a number of iPhone 4S users out there that have been waiting for an unmetered jailbreak to land for the smartphone. The untethered jailbreak is now available for the iPhone 4S and it will work for the iPad 2 as well. The hack is from the Dev Dream Team and was launched Friday. The delay in launching a jailbreak for the device was in cracking the A5 processor and that bit was apparently not at all easy to accomplish. The jailbreak is called GreenPois0n Absinthe. There are a few catches, notably the untethered break is for Mac only. The other caveat is that it will only work on devices running iOS 5.0.1 and any update to iOS will lose your jailbreak. I bet the jailbreaks to support the new updates would come much faster now that the processor has been cracked. [ via SlashGear]

Apple market cap hits $400B, Samsung patent suit shot down, Corona A5 tool

Apple, iPhone, jailbreak, news January 20th, 2012

For a little while this week Apple was worth a staggering $400 billion in market cap . That massive number put Apple as a company worth more than Greece and several other small countries. Samsung’s first patent suit over 3G tech against Apple has been shot down in Germany. The suit centered on alleged Apple infringement on 3G/UMTS patents that Samsung owns. A new jailbreak tool for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is incoming. The tool is called the Coronal A5 tool and it will let the user hack their device with the A5 processor inside.

AT&T ups data plan prices and Siri hits iPod touch with 4S restore

iPhone, iPod Touch, news, siri January 19th, 2012

If you are thinking about getting a new iPhone 4S on AT&T, you will be paying more for data, but getting a bit more data too. AT&T has a three-tier system that ups the price on each tier by $5 monthly compared to old rates. The plans still don’t offer much data with a $20 plan giving 300MB, a 3GB plan for $30, and a 5GB plan for $50 monthly. That $50 monthly plan also includes tethering for the cost. Thankfully, if you don’t want more data and need the $5 monthly savings you can stay on your existing plan. Those not asking to stay will be rolled to the new plan. If you have an iPhone 4S and an iPod touch you can get Siri on your touch. In fact, getting Siri on the touch is very simple to do according to a geek going by AppleGordon. All you have to do is run a restore of the 4S backup to your touch and Siri comes along for the ride. We are talking the claim with some sodium though. If you try it out and your device survives, let us know.

iPhone 4S fueled Q411 demand, iWork chief working on digital textbooks, iPad 3 coming early Feb?

books, iphone 4s, news, Sales January 18th, 2012

The iPhone 4S fueled heavy demand for Apple gear in Q4 2011. By December, tides had turned a bit and 45% of smartphone buyers opted for the iPhone 4S after only 30% were using the iPhone earlier in the quarter. Apple has its iWork chief handling the digital textbook project that could well change the way people in college use textbooks. I can’t wait to see what they have in store. It would be great to have digital school books on the iPad and iPhone.

Samsung seeks money for A5, GarageBand for eBooks, Jobs action figure killed

news January 17th, 2012

Samsung is making the A5/A6 processors for the iPhone and other gear in Texas. The company is reportedly seeking $1 billion in funding to boost production of the chips. The Thursday Apple event is tipped to be for product like “GarageBand for eBooks.” Sounds like a self-publishing system is on the way to me. That creepy Steve Jobs action figure has been canceled . The company set to build the toy has caved to legal threats and the feelings of the Jobs family.
