AutoCAD Returning To MacOS. AutoCAD WS Coming To iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Post from: FSMdotCOM Autodesk is bringing its AutoCAD architecture, design, and engineering software back to the Mac OS after an 18-year absence, the company announced this evening. But the company plans to do more than offer a Mac OS X version of AutoCAD: It says it will release a free version of the software, dubbed AutoCAD WS, for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch that lets users review, edit, and share AutoCAD files on those popular mobile devices. The company says AutoCAD for Mac OS X is a fully native application, using Mac OS X libraries and native UI features. AutoCAD for Mac takes full advantage of Mac OS X, including graphical browsing of design files with Cover Flow and use of multitouch gestures on Mac notebooks, the Magic Mouse, and the Magic Trackpad for intuitive pan and zoom features, a spokesman said. User-experience design patterns, such as the visual approach to drawing and layout management, have also been incorporated into AutoCAD for Mac. AutoCAD for Mac boasts an API the company describes as “extensive” and flexible customization options that allow for tailor-built workflows, simple application development and adaption, custom configurations for settings, and screen real estate options to suit individual workflows and project demands. The new AutoCAD software will ship “this falll,” the company says. The Mac OS X edition costs the same as the Windows version: $3,995 without a support subscription, and $4,445 with one. Apple, in a rare personal outreach to editors, trumpeted the news of AutoCAD’s return today. “Apple is thrilled that Autodesk is bringing AutoCAD back to the Mac,” said Philip Schiller, Apple

New And Improved YouTube And FaceTime Features In iOS 4.2 Beta 1

facetime, news September 16th, 2010

New And Improved YouTube And FaceTime Features In iOS 4.2 Beta 1 Post from: FSMdotCOM Of course, being an early beta, iOS 4.2 is not yet ready for public use, as the software still has many bugs and issues that must be addressed before the November launch. Because of bugs and issues, Apple has reportedly recommended to its developers that they only install the iOS 4.2 beta on devices that will be used exclusively to test the software. The biggest problems are said to lie with the baseband on the iPhone when running the first beta. Calls sometimes do not connect, and text messages can take a great deal of time to send. We discovered most of the new features of iOS 4.2 beta 1 ( here , here and here ) , but let’s take a look at some new features that we missed and some improved ones. YouTube voting The built-in YouTube application now features the ability to rank videos. Like on the website itself, iOS users can now give a virtual “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” to content on the site. While the YouTube application on the iPhone has stayed mostly the same since the device launched in 2007, Google this summer revamped its mobile site, allowing users to access more features in its HTML5-based website at m.youtube.com. Apple’s latest addition to the YouTube application brings a feature that has existed on the full and mobile versions of the site to the standalone iOS application. FaceTime link in Messages app Accessibility to FaceTime will become even greater in iOS 4.2, as a direct video chat link is now included in the iPhone’s built-in text messaging application. When in a conversation in the Messages app, a “FaceTime” button now rests in between the “Call” and “Contact Info” selections. Support for CoreMIDI The first beta of iOS 4.2 adds support for the CoreMIDI framework to the operating system’s application program interfaces. This could suggest that future applications would allow new avenues for musical creation, and could also allow physical MIDI instruments connectors. MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is an industry standard that allows electronic music machines to synchronize and communicate. With an adapter, a device like an iPhone could theoretically create and record sounds from a MIDI instrument. New restrictions Apple has also added a handful of new restrictions in the Settings application. Users can now prevent the deleting of App Store software, and may prevent changes to accounts in the Mail application. iTunes link in iPad Videos app Users can quickly find more content on iTunes with a new direct link within the iPad’s Videos application. When viewing a list of TV episodes on the device, users are now presented with the option to find more episodes of that program through the iTunes store. [ via AppleInsider]

Mophie has been making power packs for the iPhone for a while that look like cases and give you more battery life. Altec Lansing has debuted Octiv Duo speaker dock for iPhone and iPods with two docks to charge two devices at the same time. This is a good thing for homes like mine where there are multiple iPhones. The earphones are called the Muzx Ultra and have an iPhone remote built-in along with a mic.

iPhone iOS 4.2 Beta 1 Allows You To Assign Text Tones To Contacts Post from: FSMdotCOM Combing through the new iPhone beta, we found a new, unmentioned feature in iOS 4.2. The ability to assign separate text tones to your contacts. A pretty big feature that people have been waiting for. Not sure if you will be able to use any custom text tones, or only the built in ones at the moment.
