Apple To Release iOS 4.01 Monday To Fix The ‘Death Grip’ Issue? Baseband Might Get Upgraded Post from: FSMdotCOM Yesterday, we told you that the reception issues of the iPhone 4 might be just a iOS 4 bug . AppleInsider reports that Apple’s tech support forums originally confirmed that a iOS 4.0.1 software fix addressing the issue would ship early next week (as early as Monday), before the comments were subsequently taken down along with all the other related discussion about the matter. The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device reporting “no service” rather than switching to the frequency with the best signal to noise ratio. iOS 4 introduced some enhancements to how the baseband selects which frequencies to use, so it makes sense that the error may have crept into those changes. Additionally, this explains why iOS 4 has also caused similar problems for iPhone 3Gs users. Other related experiences that also corroborate the idea that the issue is related to iOS 4′s software control of the baseband, including the fact that the issue seems easily reproducible when connecting to a WWAN 3G network but does not appear when connecting to a Microcell 3G. If the problem were simply hardware related issues of the antenna design, it should only affect iPhone 4 units with that new design and should occur at all times, regardless of the tower type. That is not being observed. If Apple updated the iOS on Monday, they also might update the baseband. But it can also mean that they will just push more juice towards the antennas. If you don’t experience any issues with your brand new iPhone 4 , do not update to 4.01 ( if they will address the issue so fast ). If you unlocked your iPhone with ultrasn0w 0.9.3 and you experience issues on your iPhone 3G/3Gs, do not update either. Wait until we confirm if the new iOS updates the baseband or not. Otherwise, you will loose your unlock…

DROID X vs. iPhone 4: 720p HD Videos Comparison

DROID X vs. iPhone 4: 720p HD Videos Comparison Post from: FSMdotCOM We showed you a HTC Evo vs. iPhone 4 720p HD videos comparison here , and now it’s time to see a battle between the DROID X and the iPhone 4. Note that the iPhone 4 has a 5MP camera while the DROID X has a 8MP camera. The DROID X records 720p video at 24 fps, while the iPhone 4 records at 30 fps. While 6 fps seems negligible you can really tell the difference in both the indoor and outdoor tests we did. Another thing we noticed is file size. The DROID X records in the 3GP MPEG-4 format, and our 36 second clip was 102.4 MB. The iPhone 4 records in the MOV H.264 format and our 35 second video came in at 47.2 MB. The DROID X records with twice the bit-rate of the iPhone 4 which accounts for some of the difference in file sizes. The DROID X did beat out the iPhone 4 in color accuracy and audio recording quality. Here is a screen shot of what both files look like on our file system [ via BGR]

Sugru’s Bouncy iPhone 4 Hack [video] Post from: FSMdotCOM Sugru posts a new video, and this time they show you how to make your iPhone 4 bounce. This might even replace your need for an iPhone 4 case. But, be careful! You may short out the antenna doing that! As you all know by now, apparently by holding the left corner, the RF signal can be shorted… So much for Apple’s industrial design we all knew and loved… If you don’t know what Sugru is, check a second vid after the jump…

Dropping Calls On Your iPhone 4? Check Out This $0.001 DIY Fix

Dropping Calls On Your iPhone 4? Check Out This $0.001 DIY Fix Post from: FSMdotCOM Everybody is concerned about the reception issues on iPhone 4. Our readers say, they didn’t experience any call dropping , and neither did we. But still, some iPhones are affected , either because this is just an iOS 4 bug , or because ‘ you’re holding it wrong ‘. FastCompany comes up with a DIY solution that will cost you $0.001 . Get about an inch of scotch tape off the reel (that’s Sellotape if you’re in the U.K.). Cut it carefully so that you make a rectangle something over a half-inch long and just tall enough to exceed the iPhone 4′s height (about 0.4 inches should do it). Align the piece of tape so that it’s covering a section of the lower left metal side of the iPhone 4, some below the thin black plastic line and some above. Stick it around the phone’s metal edge, making sure that all of the back of the edge’s metal strip is covered–you may even be able to leave the front uncovered, as it’s the back where your hand will rest. The main thing is to ensure that it’s unlikely that your palm will touch the metal on both sides of the black plastic line.

iPhone launch day wrap up, Jobs confirms WiFi sync someday, Apple clarifies iPhone 4 reception issues

news June 25th, 2010

Yesterday was the big day for iPhone 4 fans and the device went official around the country. SlashGear has a nice wrap up of the launch day for one of the most in demand handsets ever. If you have been wishing and hoping for wireless sync for the iPhone, that wish is coming – eventually – according to Steve Jobs. In one of his famously terse replies to a geek who asked the question when/if will we get wireless sync, Jobs replied “Yep, someday.” Apple has clarified the poor reception issue that some iPhone 4 users are complaining of. The solution according to Apple is to not hold the phone that way.
