Apple already ordered 10,000,000 3G iPhones?

rumors March 26th, 2008

According to Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney, Apple has ordered 10 million iPhones made to operate on 3G networks, based on the rumours he has heard in Asia. This is an additional 10 million, to current gen phones which Apple hopes to sell by the end of 2008.

Dulaney also said that 3G iPhone uses an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display which would lead to a thinner phone and longer battery life

Finally he concluded that the iPhone didn’t do as well as expected in Europe, and hence Apple decided to move from EDGE to 3G network.

ToneShop: Free iPhone ringtones maker for Windows

Windows, apps, ringtones March 26th, 2008

Since Apple’s iTunes charge you 99 cents to create a ringtone for your iPhone, while many programs that do the same actually cost you money to download, some folks will be excited to find out about ToneShop, a free iPhone ringtones maker for Windows.

Actually to call it a ringtone maker just for the iPhone would be an understatement — ToneShop can create ringtones in MP3, AAC (M4A), WAV (uncompressed PCM and ADPCM), AMR-NB, AMR-WB (Nokia TrueTones), and MMF (Yamaha SMAF) formats, while the Apple iPhone M4R (AAC) format is just the latest addition to its lineup.

Ride with iPhone

accessories March 26th, 2008

Good news everyone. Just trying to connect my iPhone to my new jacket Burton Audex iPod Field Jacket and everything is working fine.

The Burton Audex iPod Field Jacket ($379) is a high-end snowsport jacket with an integrated iPod remote control. If you’ve ever taken a spill and watched your snowboard and MP3 player shoot off in different directions, then the Burton Audex iPod Field Jacket is worth more than a passing glance.

Like most Burton products, the Burton Audex iPod Field Jacket has a very hip design, constructed with materials that are both high-tech and high-style. The jacket employs taped seams, laminated fabric, and resizable fittings to keep moisture from finding its way through to your clothing. Zippered pockets can be found practically everywhere, in sizes large enough to stash away a pair of snow gloves, or snug enough for a pair of earbuds. An interior pocket is built into the field jacket specifically to cradle your iPod. With your iPod tucked away, earbuds can then be threaded through a small port within the jacket’s lining and up to the ears.

The Audex iPod remote control can be removed from the Burton Field Jacket’s molded rubber compartment.

While the jacket alone is worth the price, what really makes the Burton Audex iPod Field Jacket unique is the iPod remote control integration. The Audex-branded iPod remote comes in two parts: a remote receiver that plugs directly into your iPod’s dock connection; and a remote control. Both the receiver and the remote use high-frequency radio signals to communicate with one another, with an expected range of 100 feet. While the Audex iPod remote receiver is basically a nondescript black nub that plugs into your iPod, the remote control has a little more going for it. The pebble-shaped Audex remote features five rubber buttons that control volume, track skip, and play/pause. Although the Audex remote is meant to be operated within the field jacket’s custom-molded rubber compartment, it can also be used separately as a go-anywhere iPod remote. We found that the Audex iPod remote system worked flawlessly with both a fifth-generation video iPod and a third-generation iPod Nano.

Taken as a whole, both the Burton Field Jacket and Audex iPod remote system provide an uncompromised solution for sliding down a snow-covered mountain in style. There are other good ways to bring your music onto the mountain, but none that are nearly as cool.

Thanks 2 ZDNet

Caterpillar 1.2 is out

apps March 25th, 2008

Caterpillar 1.2 is out. It features a new component called Uninstall that allows you to uninstall applications right from the SpringBoard just like Web bookmarks and the apps in 2.0, and FaceLift that adds support for SummerBoard themes and extends them on its own allowing theme authors greater control over the look of the theme. Both technologies licensed from Nullriver Software, authors of Installer and SummerBoard.

Full version history is available here. Our own extensions to the theme format is available here. Enjoy!

My Touch Keys keyboard cutout screen protector for iPhone

accessories March 25th, 2008

Posted by Chris Davies

Love that iPhone look but hating the on-screen keyboard?  Don’t worry, you’re not alone; Ruddy Ugarte was so fed up at smushing his fingers against the touchscreen and ending up with typo-filled emails that he came up with My Touch Keys, a transparent screen protector with cut-outs for the iPhone’s QWERTY keyboard.

My Touch Keys for iPhone

Clinging to your iPhone’s screen via static, the overlay apparently lets your fingers learn where the individual keys are, based on the texture.  Obviously in the photos they’ve added a blue tint so you can see it attached; in real life it’s transparent, and My Touch Keys say it won’t distract from watching video or even using gestures such as zooming in other apps.

Sold in packs of two, you can get the My Touch Keys overlay now for $7.99

AppStore “sneak peak”

news March 25th, 2008

The screen shots below might be a rare sneak peak of the new App Store. As to whether they’re fake or real, only time will tell and it’s up to you to decide. From what I caner from the images, the look of the supposed App Store appears to be very similar to installer.app with notable features include the ability to browse Featured, Genres, Top 50, Search and Updates.

Internationalize your iPhone .com key

news, tricks March 23rd, 2008

Today Mac OS X hints offers an easily overlooked internationalization hint. You probably know already that you can hold down a key on the iPhone keyboard to select international versions of a character (eg. Accented characters).

iPhone Accented Trick

What you might not have know about was the regional domains. In settings, choose General > Keyboards and enable some of those international keyboards.

Next go to Safari and start to enter a new URL. Tap the globe to switch the active keyboard from US English to some other nationality. (Russian is shown here.) Finally, tap and hold the .com button. After a second, a regionalized version of .com appears just to the left of the default.
