Poring through the latest iPhone 2.0 firmware that Apple has distributed to developers, The Boy Genius spotted that a new YouTube plugin for MobileSafari.app has been added. At present, video embedded into webpages won’t display in the iPhone’s browser, and only YouTube content is visible in a separate program. It’s unclear right now whether this new plugin will simply embed the separate YouTube app into the webpage, or is a sign of more advanced Flash development on Apple’s part.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has previously criticised Adobe’s Flash offerings, claiming the full desktop version to slow and the specially-formatted mobile version not good enough for the iPhone. In response, Adobe examined the iPhone SDK to see whether they could code a unique version of their embedded Flash viewer for the handset; however, Apple’s third-party software rules scuppered any chance of that, as they do not allow for Safari plugins, only standalone apps.

As it stands, then, the only possibility for an official Adobe Flash solution with the current SDK is if Apple gives them special treatment and permits a version of their software to work with Mobile Safari. This new Firmware 2.0 plugin could be a sign of that, but it’s simply too early to say.

A new version, v3.0, of Zibri’s ZiPhone is now available. This version is compatible with all currently available iPhone and iPod Touch firmwares, from v1.0.0 to v1.1.4 and can now fix a problem with WiFi that occurred to some users.

Another neat new program (actually, two of them) popped up online for complete GUI iPhone and jailbreaking. Both of the programs (one is for Mac, the other is for Windows machines), just like ZiPhone, can unlock any existing and currently available iPhone firmware version (from v1.0.0 to v1.1.4 — it can also jailbreak the iPod Touch).

The programs provide a nice clean, user-friendly interface, and can also fix the no EDGE/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth problem some may have run into. It even automatically shuts down iTunes and detects which type of device is connected (iPhone or iPod Touch), and then changes the settings accordingly.

Now that iPhone has almost become an open platform for third party software development, we can expect tons of new exciting applications that will make it into a much more useful thing, then a fancy phone and media player.

But that does not mean that developers inside Apple are leaving all this to the third parties. They are also busy, thinking up a whole lot of new things that an iPhone could do.

And recent patent applications provide us with a glimpse of the things to come.
